Being Lazy

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

I was speaking with a client the other day who owns an ecommerce website.  We were discussing a method to update the shipping on each product on his site and how he could go in and update a few variables that would apply to all of his products.  I kept suggesting we do it a different way that would save a lot of time and would be more efficient for future use, but he kept misunderstanding what I was saying.

Then it finally dawned on him, “oh, you can do that?”  The he said, “I always say, give a lazy man something to do and he’ll find the best way to do it.”.

I took it as a compliment.  Sometimes lazy people work smarter.

I don’t promote being lazy, but I loathe repetitive processes when there’s a function that can be used instead.  Of course this is where you have to be practical too.  Don’t spend 2hrs trying to figure out a process to automate 10 repetitions.  Be creative, be smart, be lazy, but be practical!
